Citizen science

What can you do?

"Citizen science is the involvement of the public in scientific research – whether community-driven research or global investigations." (https://www.citizenscience.org)

"Citizen science is the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research to increase scientific knowledge. Through citizen science, people share and contribute to data monitoring and collection programs. "(https://www.nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/citizen-science/)

  • Think about urban ponds.

This projects aims to better understand how citizens recognise and perceive ecosystem services provided by urban ponds.

In order to give more attention to these small, but very interesting and important ecosystems, our project contributes to the scientific knowledge and overall understanding of urban ponds and their importance in our society

While ponds can be a huge contribution to biodiversity, they provide ecosystem services such as wildlife habitat, drinking water provision or stormwater retention. Humans use ponds in various ways, however, highly eutrophic ponds can be a certain danger to humans and animals, as they can, for example, develop toxic cyanobacteria blooms. Small-size water bodies are not being considered in the EU water framework directive, although they are very common and are often close to humans, for example in urban areas.
